Don’t fall into Engagement limbo!

Once you know who you are going to spend the rest of your life with, take Nike’s motto and ‘Just do it.

Did you know an engagement of over a year is a fairly recent phenomenon? Centuries ago, possibly due to shortened life expectancy and lack of birth control, the Wedding happened soon after the ring was on the finger.

The average length of an engagement is around twenty months… that’s way too long. Even a big wedding shouldn’t take more than ten months to organise. Anything more than that, and you start to cause unnecessary distress.

Most people who just jump right in and have a short engagement love it because they simply don’t have to be engaged anymore.

Nobody tells you this, but engagements are a right pain. That’s why they’re never in romantic comedies; “I love you” is immediately followed by “I do”, with the engagement stress and boredom edited out.

You don’t have to organise that much…

If you have a reputable venue, they do most of the hard work for you. All you have to do it tick the boxes: the menu (which includes all the dietaries), timing, (it’s usually the same for all weddings), the seating plan (becomes pretty obvious once you separate foes and fighting rellies). Get a local photographer, (they know where and how to take the best shots), speeches (Tip: Keep them quick), music (band v’s DJ, v’s Spotify), invitations (not hard nor expensive if you do it online).
Set a budget and stick to it.

Long engagements can create arguments with your parents, parents-in-law-to-be, groomsmen & bridesmaids. Give them all a break and let them know it’s your day. You’re not asking them to organise it, you want them to enjoy it and just come along and share it with you.

I heard a very wise man say: The value of the wedding is inversely proportionate to the quality of the marriage.
